The delicious details

Engel is a shop and a café in one, in the middle of Zwolle's Sassenstraat shopping street. Henk and Arno run it as the second address in their De Horecamannen collection, and the two halves share one idea: everything sold or served should have a background worth explaining.

The kitchen opens early for breakfast and carries on through lunch and cake. Almost every dish is vegetarian or vegan, built where possible on organic, local and in season produce, with organic eggs in the shakshuka and the cilbir.

Coffee is roasted in nearby Kampen by De Eenhoorn, cheese comes from Harry's Kazen in Noord Holland, and the vegan patisserie is made by Rose & Vanilla in Utrecht. Part of what the shop earns from its recycled and fair trade range goes to Stichting Adopteer Regenwoud.

Menu
What's on the table, and what's left off

Breakfast and lunch built almost entirely on vegetables, pulses and grains. The coffee is roasted in Kampen and the patisserie is organic and free of gluten and lactose. A handful of dishes carry meat or fish; everything else is vegetarian or vegan.

Breakfast runs from a full spread to porridge with fresh fruit and walnuts, Turkish cilbir with soft boiled eggs and harissa, and organic eggs on toast cooked the way you ask for them. Lunch is sandwiches, soup, a quinoa salad with roasted vegetables, feta, mint and hummus, shakshuka, and a halloumi wrap.

Almost everything on the card is vegetarian or vegan. The yoghurt can be made plant based, the pancakes come with choco hummus, and the muhammara sandwich is built on peppers and walnuts. A handful of dishes carry meat or fish, among them serrano ham, smoked salmon and a chicken curry.

The patisserie from Rose & Vanilla is organic, gluten free and lactose free, so there is cake for guests avoiding gluten or dairy. Coffee and tea come from the roastery in Kampen, and the beer list is drawn from craft brewers.

How this restaurant rates
3 - Endorsed

Engel sources from named suppliers, runs a menu that is almost entirely vegetarian or vegan, and channels part of what its shop earns towards a social cause.

On sourcing, coffee and tea come from De Eenhoorn, a roastery in Kampen that roasts weekly in its own building on the Oudestraat and buys from small scale growers its team visits directly. Cheese is bought from Harry's Kazen in Noord Holland, the vegan patisserie from Rose & Vanilla in Utrecht, and mustard and pickles from Kesbeke, with the kitchen working with organic, local and in season products where it can.

On the menu, almost every dish is vegetarian or vegan, and vegetables, pulses and grains carry the plate rather than sitting beside it. Part of the takings from the shop's recycled and fair trade range goes to Stichting Adopteer Regenwoud, and a share of that range is handmade by people who face barriers to work.

Plant-forward menu

Coffee roasted in Kampen by De Eenhoorn, cheese from Harry's Kazen, patisserie from Rose & Vanilla.

The kitchen works with organic, local and seasonal products where possible, naming four suppliers. Coffee and tea are roasted by De Eenhoorn in Kampen, which roasts weekly in its own building from small-scale growers it visits directly. Cheese comes from Harry's Kazen in Noord Holland, vegan patisserie from Rose & Vanilla in Utrecht, and mustard and pickles from Kesbeke.

De Eenhoorn is the genuinely local relationship in the Overijssel context, roughly fifteen kilometres from Zwolle. The other suppliers are Dutch but regional. Bread, vegetables, dairy and eggs carry no named supplier.

Seasonal ingredients stated as a working principle; no menu rotation or specials documented.

The kitchen states it sources organic, local and seasonal products where possible. The published menu reads as a standing carte with no evidence of rotation: no archived earlier menus showing changes, no specials board, and no social-media documentation of produce coming into or out of season.

Catering orders delivered by cargo bike; shop stocks recycled goods.

Catering orders are delivered by cargo bike. The shop stocks recycled glassware and a range of recycled goods. No food waste practice, composting partnership, plastic-reduction policy, or energy measure is published for the kitchen.

Organic eggs named in three dishes; cheese from Harry's Kazen; no sourcing information for meat or fish.

Organic eggs are named in the shakshuka, cilbir and eggs on toast. Cheese is bought from Harry's Kazen, a traceable supplier in Noord Holland.

Meat and fish on the menu carry no sourcing information. Serrano ham, a chicken curry, bacon on the pancakes, a charcuterie board and smoked salmon are listed without supplier, origin or welfare qualification.

Shop proceeds support Stichting Adopteer Regenwoud; fair-trade and handmade goods feature in the assortment.

Part of the proceeds from the shop's assortment of fair-trade, recycled and handmade goods goes to Stichting Adopteer Regenwoud, a Dutch foundation that supports rainforest conservation. The shop range is handmade in part by people at a distance from the labour market.

Almost all dishes vegetarian or vegan; vegetables carry the plate as substance, not a side.

Almost all dishes are vegetarian or vegan. Of the roughly twenty-four food items, only four or five carry meat or fish: serrano ham, smoked salmon, a chicken curry, bacon on the pancakes and a charcuterie board. Vegetables carry the plate as its substance, muhammara built on peppers and walnuts, a quinoa salad with roasted vegetables and hummus, shakshuka in a tomato and pepper sauce, a halloumi wrap.

Vegan provision is built in rather than an afterthought. The yoghurt can be made plant-based, pancakes come with choco hummus, and the vegan patisserie from Rose & Vanilla runs to organic cakes without gluten, dairy or refined sugar.

How we score
The My Treats impact scale

Every restaurant is assessed against SEERO, our six-dimension sustainability framework — covering sourcing, seasonality, waste, animal products, social impact, and plant-forward cooking. Each finding is weighted by how strongly it is corroborated. The combined result is translated into an impact score from 1 to 5.

The five levels

SEERO is an acronym for Starting, Engaged, Endorsed, Recognised, Outstanding:

Starting First verified signals of sustainable practice.
Engaged Credible practice across two dimensions.
Endorsed Meaningful practice across three or more dimensions.
This place
Recognised Strong practice across four or more dimensions, with independent corroboration.
Outstanding Top-tier practice, confirmed by recognised third-party audit.

How a level is reached. Each level needs two things together: a minimum number of dimensions covered, and a minimum overall strength of evidence across them. A dimension only counts once its evidence is specific and substantiated — a passing mention doesn't qualify. Meeting only one of the two keeps a restaurant a level lower.

Scores of four or five require human validation and, at the top tier, an external audit. Scores are based on publicly available evidence and restaurant submissions at the time of assessment.

How evidence is weighted
Self-declared Stated by the restaurant on its website, menu or in a submission. Plausible, but not yet independently corroborated.
Researched Found through independent research; one credible third-party source backs the claim.
Vouched Corroborated across more than one independent source. Some gaps may remain.
Audited Fully corroborated across independent sources or by a recognised third-party certification.
What the sourcing checkmarks mean
✓ Full check — independently verified: corroborated across more than one source, or audited / third-party certified (vouched or audited).
✓ Light check — self-declared or from a single source. Not yet independently verified.
