The delicious details

MIES takes its name from Mies Lanen, who built this Mathenesserlaan house in 1938 as a training institute where young women could work towards financial independence. Her story sets the tone, inside a building that still reads as an example of Bauhaus design.

Chef Lucas Jeffries cooks Dutch classics with a modern turn, served a la carte or as a three, four or five course menu from Wednesday to Saturday, with a family lunch on Sunday. Produce follows the seasons, and the bar keeps a dish of the day drawn from Dutch culinary history.

The house also gives space to Rotterdam makers. A new artist shows work every three months, 10 percent of every artwork sold goes to Stichting Lekker Geven, and MIES has cooked with Oma's Soep, bringing younger and older neighbours around one table.

Menu
What's on the table, and what's left off

The cooking is Dutch read through a modern lens: classics rebuilt by chef Lucas Jeffries, served a la carte or as a three, four or five course menu from Wednesday to Saturday, with a long family lunch on Sunday. Earlier in the week the kitchen runs breakfast and lunch, with an evening bar menu and a dish of the day drawn from Dutch culinary history. Menus move with the seasons, and the drinks list carries wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic options.

How this restaurant rates
2 - Engaged

MIES has confirmed practice in two areas of responsible cooking: how the kitchen works with the seasons, and what the house does for the people around it.

Seasonal produce is the organising idea of the cooking rather than a note on the card. The restaurant menu changes with the season, the bar list carries seasonal plates, and a dish of the day changes daily around what is good at that moment.

On the social side the commitments are named and recurring. 10 percent of the proceeds of every artwork sold in the building goes to Stichting Lekker Geven, a Rotterdam foundation working with people living in poverty. A new Rotterdam artist is given the walls every three months through ArtPublicity, cultural evenings and workshops bring neighbourhood makers into the room, and MIES has cooked with Oma's Soep, which brings younger and older neighbours together over food.

Social impact✓

Seasonal produce from local suppliers is stated as a working principle, emphasising respect for the origin of each ingredient.

Seasonal produce from local suppliers is stated as a working principle of the kitchen in the restaurant's own launch release, on its community page, and in every launch report that followed. The community page references 'respect for the origin of each ingredient' as a guiding principle.

Seasonality is the stated organising principle: the kitchen's menus rotate frequently, a dish of the day changes daily at the bar, and seasonal plates are a core offering.

Seasonality is the stated organising principle of the kitchen. The restaurant's own menu page describes cooking built on seasonal products and a bar card running from house bites to seasonal plates. The launch release highlights 'seizoensproducten' (seasonal products) as the first of three things the kitchen is built on.

Rotation is evidenced rather than only claimed. A dish of the day changes daily at the bar, the restaurant runs both an à la carte card and a chef's menu of three to five courses, and the menu page states that the cards change frequently.

10 percent of artwork proceeds support Stichting Lekker Geven; quarterly exhibitions feature emerging Rotterdam artists through ArtPublicity; cultural evenings and workshops bring neighbourhood makers together.

Two of the three social areas carry named, checkable commitments. On cause support, the community page states that 10 percent of the proceeds of every artwork sold in the building goes to Stichting Lekker Geven, a Rotterdam foundation working with people facing poverty and hardship.

On community engagement, a rotating exhibition programme gives emerging Rotterdam artists the walls every three months through partnership with ArtPublicity, the house runs cultural evenings, workshops and lectures with neighbourhood makers, and it has participated in Oma's Soep and Nationale Monumentendag. The house states a deliberate preference for female makers and artists, connected to the Mies Lanen story the restaurant is named after. Independent corroboration comes from Museumnacht010's city programme listing, which features a MIES dinner built around a photographic series by Mark Redan and Bregje Wentink with Studio de Bakkerij.

How we score
The My Treats impact scale

Every restaurant is assessed against SEERO, our six-dimension sustainability framework — covering sourcing, seasonality, waste, animal products, social impact, and plant-forward cooking. Each finding is weighted by how strongly it is corroborated. The combined result is translated into an impact score from 1 to 5.

The five levels

SEERO is an acronym for Starting, Engaged, Endorsed, Recognised, Outstanding:

Starting First verified signals of sustainable practice.
Engaged Credible practice across two dimensions.
This place
Endorsed Meaningful practice across three or more dimensions.
Recognised Strong practice across four or more dimensions, with independent corroboration.
Outstanding Top-tier practice, confirmed by recognised third-party audit.

How a level is reached. Each level needs two things together: a minimum number of dimensions covered, and a minimum overall strength of evidence across them. A dimension only counts once its evidence is specific and substantiated — a passing mention doesn't qualify. Meeting only one of the two keeps a restaurant a level lower.

Scores of four or five require human validation and, at the top tier, an external audit. Scores are based on publicly available evidence and restaurant submissions at the time of assessment.

How evidence is weighted
Self-declared Stated by the restaurant on its website, menu or in a submission. Plausible, but not yet independently corroborated.
Researched Found through independent research; one credible third-party source backs the claim.
Vouched Corroborated across more than one independent source. Some gaps may remain.
Audited Fully corroborated across independent sources or by a recognised third-party certification.
What the sourcing checkmarks mean
✓ Full check — independently verified: corroborated across more than one source, or audited / third-party certified (vouched or audited).
✓ Light check — self-declared or from a single source. Not yet independently verified.
