The delicious details

Hart Beach has been a surfing family on Scheveningen beach since 1971, when Etsko Schuitema opened what became the first surf school in the Netherlands. His sons Romke and Paul run it now, and the shop, the school and the kitchen still share one pavilion on the sand.

The restaurant grew out of a beach shack and took its present form in 2014. It serves breakfast through to a late drink every day of the year, with a wood-fired oven at the centre of the kitchen and a fireplace for the winter months.

The terrace looks straight out over the North Sea. Dogs are welcome on a leash, there is play equipment in the sand and a box of toys indoors, and the pavilion holds a Green Key certificate.

Menu
What's on the table, and what's left off

Seasonal menu centring on wood-fired pizza, burgers, salads and small plates, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options marked throughout, open year-round from breakfast through late drinks.

The menu changes with the seasons, turning to fresher ingredients in summer and heavier ones through the winter, and holds steady around pizza from the wood-fired oven, burgers, salads and smaller plates.

Vegetarian and vegan dishes carry their own icon on the card, and the smoothies and the acai bowl are vegan. Gluten-free choices are available, and the kitchen asks guests to raise any other dietary requirement with the floor staff. Children's dishes are on the card all year.

The restaurant states it works 'as much as possible with local, fresh & organic products', though no named suppliers or direct producer relationships are documented.

Local sourcing is positioned as a value of the kitchen, described as working 'as much as possible with local, fresh & organic products'. The restaurant's own pages and menus reiterate this commitment throughout.

The kitchen operates to a seasonal menu that shifts between lighter summer ingredients and heavier winter ones, with the rotation stated and explained on the restaurant's pages.

Seasonal rotation is stated as a working principle and described with a mechanism rather than left as decoration. The Dutch and English restaurant pages both state the kitchen works to a seasonal menu, explaining how it varies between summer's fresher ingredients and winter's heavier ones.

The claim is repeated on the menu page and restated in the Den Haag destination listing, establishing that the seasonal rotation is a documented and recurring practice.

Hart Beach holds a Green Key certificate, awarded to the beach pavilion for practices in waste, water and energy management.

The basis for this dimension is a Green Key certificate held by Hart Beach itself. The official Den Haag destination site states the establishment holds Green Key, and lists it among beach clubs and bars with Green Key Certificates. Green Key is awarded to the beach pavilion that operates the restaurant, the surf school and the shop, so this is the venue's own credential, not a parent property's.

Green Key assessment covers waste, water and energy management, which makes it a concrete, named credential rather than generic environmental language.

How we score
The My Treats impact scale

Every restaurant is assessed against SEERO, our six-dimension sustainability framework — covering sourcing, seasonality, waste, animal products, social impact, and plant-forward cooking. Each finding is weighted by how strongly it is corroborated. The combined result is translated into an impact score from 1 to 5.

The five levels

SEERO is an acronym for Starting, Engaged, Endorsed, Recognised, Outstanding:

Starting First verified signals of sustainable practice.
Engaged Credible practice across two dimensions.
This place
Endorsed Meaningful practice across three or more dimensions.
Recognised Strong practice across four or more dimensions, with independent corroboration.
Outstanding Top-tier practice, confirmed by recognised third-party audit.

How a level is reached. Each level needs two things together: a minimum number of dimensions covered, and a minimum overall strength of evidence across them. A dimension only counts once its evidence is specific and substantiated — a passing mention doesn't qualify. Meeting only one of the two keeps a restaurant a level lower.

Scores of four or five require human validation and, at the top tier, an external audit. Scores are based on publicly available evidence and restaurant submissions at the time of assessment.

How evidence is weighted
Self-declared Stated by the restaurant on its website, menu or in a submission. Plausible, but not yet independently corroborated.
Researched Found through independent research; one credible third-party source backs the claim.
Vouched Corroborated across more than one independent source. Some gaps may remain.
Audited Fully corroborated across independent sources or by a recognised third-party certification.
What the sourcing checkmarks mean
✓ Full check — independently verified: corroborated across more than one source, or audited / third-party certified (vouched or audited).
✓ Light check — self-declared or from a single source. Not yet independently verified.
