The delicious details

KEEK is a certified-organic bakery and lunchroom that has been part of Utrecht's old centre since 2008. The Oudegracht shop is its canal-side counter, where a large assortment of small breads, cakes, soups and juices is sold to eat in or take away.

Everything is made in-house at KEEK's own city bakery, from sourdough breads and croissants to focaccia, scones, tarts and quiches. Coffee comes from Utrecht roaster BOOT, and the kitchen works entirely with organic ingredients.

The shop keeps a deliberately laptop-free counter, with benches inside and around it, so a coffee by the water stays a social moment rather than a workspace.

KEEK is a fully Skal-certified organic operation (NL-BIO-01, Skal no. 111920), meaning every ingredient used in the bakery and lunchroom meets certified organic standards, including the dairy and eggs in its quiches and fillings. All breads, pastries, soups and fillings are baked and prepared in-house at KEEK's own Utrecht bakery, and the ovens run on solar energy. Homemade lemonade is served in reusable bottles.

Plant-forward menu

One named local supplier (Utrecht roaster BOOT) and local in-city production, without demonstrable local raw-ingredient sourcing.

KEEK works with certified organic ingredients and bakes everything at its own Utrecht bakery, and its coffee is from Utrecht roaster BOOT, a named local supplier. However, organic sourcing is not the same as local sourcing: no farms or growers are named, and the provenance of raw ingredients such as flour, produce and dairy is not evidenced as local or short-chain.

In-house baking, solar-energy ovens, and homemade lemonade in reusable bottles.

KEEK bakes on solar energy. Making all breads, pastries, soups, quiches and fillings in-house reduces reliance on pre-packaged inputs, and homemade lemonade is served in reusable/returnable bottles. These are several concrete environmental and low-waste practices, though self-declared and not independently audited for waste outcomes.

Certified organic animal products (dairy, eggs) via Skal certification (NL-BIO-01).

KEEK holds 100% organic certification (Skal, NL-BIO-01), which is independently verifiable and covers all ingredients including dairy and eggs used in quiches, scones and fillings. Certified organic animal products meet higher welfare and production standards. The menu is dairy- and egg-led rather than meat- or fish-forward, and no species-specific sustainable-seafood credential (MSC/ASC) or named meat sourcing was evidenced, so the score rests on the organic certification of the animal products actually used.

Meaningful vegetarian choices across focaccia, salads and bakery items, though the concept is grain- and pastry-led rather than vegetable-led.

The menu carries meaningful vegetarian choices across focaccia, salads and bakery items, and the concept is vegetarian-leaning. However, as a bakery and lunchroom it is grain- and pastry-led rather than vegetable-led, and there is no evidence of a predominantly plant-based or vegetable-forward menu share.

How we score
The My Treats impact scale

Every restaurant is assessed against SEERO, our six-dimension sustainability framework — covering sourcing, seasonality, waste, animal products, social impact, and plant-forward cooking. Each finding is weighted by how strongly it is corroborated. The combined result is translated into a planet rating from 1 to 5.

The five levels

SEERO is an acronym for Starting, Engaged, Endorsed, Recognised, Outstanding:

Starting First verified signals of sustainable practice.
Engaged Credible practice across two dimensions.
This place
Endorsed Meaningful practice across three or more dimensions.
Recognised Strong practice across four or more dimensions, with independent corroboration.
Outstanding Top-tier practice, confirmed by recognised third-party audit.

How a level is reached. Each level needs two things together: a minimum number of dimensions covered, and a minimum overall strength of evidence across them. A dimension only counts once its evidence is specific and substantiated — a passing mention doesn't qualify. Meeting only one of the two keeps a restaurant a level lower.

Ratings of four or five planets require human validation and, at the top tier, an external audit. Scores are based on publicly available evidence and restaurant submissions at the time of assessment.

How evidence is weighted
Self-declared Stated by the restaurant on its website, menu or in a submission. Plausible, but not yet independently corroborated.
Researched Found through independent research; one credible third-party source backs the claim.
Vouched Corroborated across more than one independent source. Some gaps may remain.
Audited Fully corroborated across independent sources or by a recognised third-party certification.
What the sourcing checkmarks mean
✓ Full check — independently verified: corroborated across more than one source, or audited / third-party certified (vouched or audited).
✓ Light check — self-declared or from a single source. Not yet independently verified.
